Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
