Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
